Iliotibial band (IT band) syndrome

Why do injuries happen?

Dr. Jeremiah Jimerson

IT’S NOT JUST A MATTER OF TREATING SYMPTOMS, BUT SOLVING YOUR WHY

Far too many people waste time and money chasing symptoms. Getting adjustments, countless physical therapy hours, stretching and foam rolling, injections and surgeries while never getting true clarity about WHY their pain happened in the first place – this needs to STOP!

Do you have pain at the outside of your knee?
Do you have pain between your hip and knee?
Does your outside of leg pain worsen with activity?
Have you been diagnosed with IT band syndrome (ITBS)?

If you have pain that occurs anywhere from the outside of the knee all the way to the outside of your hip you may have Iliotibial Band Syndrome.

IT band syndrome typically occurs in runners but can also be seen in other athletes and non-athletes alike in Charleston.

Dr. Jimerson has treated and resolved thousands of IT band cases in his Charleston and Summerville over the past 15 years. Over 90% of cases report a 90% improvement after the first visit with most cases resolving in 4-6 treatments dependent upon severity of the cases.

We’ve treated many runner’s that developed IT band syndrome prior to major races like Boston Marathon, NYC Marathon and Charleston’s own annual Bridge Run.

Some IT band cases feel pain first thing in the morning when their muscles are tight and often going up and down stairs or as they first begin their morning run (or other exercise). Other IT Band cases will flare up mid run or mid exercise as muscles begin to fatigue resulting in IT band developing scar tissue and subsequent IT band pain.

Treating symptoms is one thing, finding the root cause of those symptoms SOLVES the problem

The world of pain relief is filled with marketing and massive amounts of myopic thinking. This chiropractor says “a bone is out of place,” that physical therapy office says “just do this 10 pages of exercises” and often the medical approach is to medicate, inject, or cut – sadly, that’s the world that we live in and unlike this website it’s not all black and white.

The fact is, treating symptoms will never result in permanent relief. It’s like duct taping a leaky ceiling. It might look good for a hot minute, but it doesn’t take that long before you wish you hired a better contractor.

After being in the pain and performance world for 20 plus years, my focus today is providing immediate relief, but also being the detective that leaves no stone unturned of showing you how to keep it that way.

One of the biggest reasons for our high success rate at resolving IT band pain quickly and permanently no matter what other treatments that you’ve tried before (I’m looking you “how to foam roll your IT band” videos!) is by finding out the root cause of what caused the IT band injury in the first place.

Most IT band injuries are caused from an imbalance in what is known as the Lateral Chain Stabilizers or all of the muscles that stabilize us laterally or in the coronal plane.

Dr. Jimerson typically treats IT band cases first with Active Release Technique, a patented scar tissue release that resolved adhesions in muscles, tendons, ligaments and around nerves. From there he often removes any leftover pain with his proprietary pain technique that shuts pain down and speeds healing in seconds.

While Dr. Jimerson has been voted best chiropractor in Charleston, he doesn’t necessarily look at things from a chiropractic perspective and thus avoids unnecessary chiropractic adjustments and x-rays. It is this methodology and his ability to look at injuries from an outside the box perspective that Charleston Orthopedic Surgeons, Physical Therapists and other Chiropractors routinely refer complex and unfixable pain cases to him.
