Far too many people waste time and money chasing symptoms. Getting adjustments, countless physical therapy hours, stretching and foam rolling, injections and surgeries while never getting true clarity about WHY their pain happened in the first place – this needs to STOP!
Do you have pain in your calf?
Calf pains and strains are common in athletes. Charleston is a Mecca for runners, triathletes, golfers and tennis players and calf pain can be common due to the repetitive nature of those sports, however, living with calf pain is not normal.
Calf pain is often caused by shortening of the gastroc and soleus muscles (before they join to form the achilles tendon) of the lower leg. This can create scar tissue and adhesions in those muscles that often will feel more tight and painful during periods of rest.
We’ve treated thousands of calf injuries over the past 15 years in our Charleston Chiropractic office, with patients traveling from surrounding Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and Kiawah areas.
Often patients will have already tried stretching, foam rolling, physical therapy and acupuncture before they end up in our clinic.
To effectively treat any injury and make sure it doesn’t come back you have to determine the actual cause of the calf strain and pain which means looking at the entire body.
Weaknesses in the core can cause the athlete to shift over to the injured side, resulting in continued re-injury. Tight hip flexors and quad muscles from sitting all day can cause weak glutes and the pelvis to pull forward, both causing extra strain and pain on the calf muscles.
Tight ankle joints and poor toe flexibility can also be a factor in calf pain.
When we treat patients for calf pain, Dr. Jimerson does a full biomechanical exam to determine the root cause of your injury.
We typically start with Active Release Technique, a patented soft tissue technique that breaks down scar tissue in muscles and release imbalances in calf muscles as well as in all of the areas around the body that caused the calf pain and strain in the first place.
Treating symptoms is one thing, finding the root cause of those symptoms SOLVES the problem
The world of pain relief is filled with marketing and massive amounts of myopic thinking. This chiropractor says “a bone is out of place,” that physical therapy office says “just do this 10 pages of exercises” and often the medical approach is to medicate, inject, or cut – sadly, that’s the world that we live in and unlike this website it’s not all black and white.
The fact is, treating symptoms will never result in permanent relief. It’s like duct taping a leaky ceiling. It might look good for a hot minute, but it doesn’t take that long before you wish you hired a better contractor.
After being in the pain and performance world for 20 plus years, my focus today is providing immediate relief, but also being the detective that leaves no stone unturned of showing you how to keep it that way.
