Why do injuries happen?

Dr. Jeremiah Jimerson

IT’S NOT JUST A MATTER OF TREATING SYMPTOMS, BUT SOLVING YOUR WHY

Far too many people waste time and money chasing symptoms. Getting adjustments, countless physical therapy hours, stretching and foam rolling, injections and surgeries while never getting true clarity about WHY their pain happened in the first place – this needs to STOP!

Do you have pain in your jaw?

Does your jaw hurt when you chew?

Do you notice popping and clicking in your jaw when you chew?

It is difficult for you to open your mouth up all the way?

Does your jaw lock up when you are chewing?

Does your Dentist tell you that you grind your teeth at night?

Do you have headaches, migraines, neck pain, back pain or earaches?

You may have temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ.

If you’re ready to fix your TMJ pain once and for all, read on.

The TMJ or Jaw Joints are actually one of the most complex joints in the body due to its ability to move up and down as well as side to side.

Dr. Jimerson has treated and resolved THOUSANDS of TMJ cases in his Summerville and Charleston Chiropractic offices over the past 15 years.

One of the worst cases of TMJ / TMD cases that we have seen was a woman who couldn’t open her mouth more than the width of just one finger. She came to our Summerville office.

Her TMJ wasn’t able to be resolved by Physical Therapy, Bite Guards, Massage or Injections. Her next step was a procedure that was to be done under anesthesia at MUSC where doctors were going to break her jaw in an attempt to restore her range of motion and take care of her pain.

Insurance companies don’t recognize TMJ and she was going to be forced to pay $15K out of pocket for the procedure when she came in for her first treatment.

Dr. Jimerson did laser therapy on her jaw joint as well as manipulated her medial pterygoid muscles in her mouth as well as released scar tissue and adhesions in her neck and upper back.

After 3 weeks. She was able to open her mouth fully and was able to fulfill her dream of being able to eat a cheeseburger again.

Often treatments for TMJ don’t exactly resolve the actual cause of the TMJ in the first place and resultant fail miserably.

Researchers are still looking at hormonal causes of TMJ as it affects women more predominantly than men.

What we have found is that due to our neurology of the muscles of the jaw, we often utilize the jaw for motor control. Meaning when we have a weak muscle in the body, we have a tendency to grit our jaws for strength.

Maybe you’ve caught yourself at the gym or when you are lifting something heavy that you grit your jaw. Over time this becomes a motor pattern and you start creating motor software that tells your jaw to grit down for extra strength every time you begin to fatigue.

Treating symptoms is one thing, finding the root cause of those symptoms SOLVES the problem

The world of pain relief is filled with marketing and massive amounts of myopic thinking. This chiropractor says “a bone is out of place,” that physical therapy office says “just do this 10 pages of exercises” and often the medical approach is to medicate, inject, or cut – sadly, that’s the world that we live in and unlike this website it’s not all black and white.

The fact is, treating symptoms will never result in permanent relief. It’s like duct taping a leaky ceiling. It might look good for a hot minute, but it doesn’t take that long before you wish you hired a better contractor.

After being in the pain and performance world for 20 plus years, my focus today is providing immediate relief, but also being the detective that leaves no stone unturned of showing you how to keep it that way.

Dr. Jeremiah is my go to for my patients when all else fails

Priscilla Nugent – Physical Therapist

Watch this. Stand up and attempt to touch your toes. You’re looking to see how tight your hamstrings are.

Massage the tender and sore trigger points in your jaw with your fingertips looking all around to the front, back and side of your jaw joint. Don’t make yourself too sore, but do this for 30 seconds to a minute.

Try to touch your toes again. You will most likely notice that you go down much further than before. This is because your body had begun to rely on clenching your teeth for core strength. By releasing your jaw muscles you are making your core muscles stronger which protects the spine and relaxes the hamstring muscles. Pretty cool right?

This results in chronic overuse of jaw muscles and if you’ve read anything that we’ve written about overworked muscles is that they cool down and get tighter as we sleep. Thus resulting in grinding as we sleep.

Another common cause of TMJ and overworked jaw muscles is stress. Have you ever been so stressed about something that you wanted to bite someone’s head off?

Often when we get stressed we grit our jaw muscles. In today’s world, our lives are loaded in stressful situations resulting in lots of teeth gritting throughout the day leading to even more clenching at night.

Another culprit of TMJ pain is poor posture.

We hunch forward in almost all of our activities during the day from reading, computers, cell phones, driving, eating, and often sleeping.

We have secondary chewing muscles that extend all the way down in your neck and they become shortened over time with poor posture.

Also as our posture pulls forward our jaw joint becomes compressed. All of these things can be relieved by working on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves involved with posture.

If you’ve tried everything to resolve your TMJ pain from Charleston Dentists, Orthopedists, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and Massage Therapists without any relief, you may need to see Dr. Jimerson.

Dr. Jimerson begins each treatment with a full biomechanical exam to determine the root cause of your TMJ and jaw pain.

From there he will often use Active Release Technique, a patented myofascial release that break down scar tissue in muscles, tendons, ligaments and around nerves.

He will also use his proprietary pain technique that turns of pain and speeds healing in seconds.

While Dr. Jimerson has been voted best chiropractor in Charleston, he doesn’t necessarily look at things from a chiropractic perspective and thus avoids unnecessary chiropractic adjustments and x-rays. It is this methodology and his ability to look at injuries from an outside the box perspective that Charleston Orthopedic Surgeons, Physical Therapists and other Chiropractors routinely refer complex and unfixable pain cases to him.
