Why do injuries happen?

Dr. Jeremiah Jimerson

IT’S NOT JUST A MATTER OF TREATING SYMPTOMS, BUT SOLVING YOUR WHY

Far too many people waste time and money chasing symptoms. Getting adjustments, countless physical therapy hours, stretching and foam rolling, injections and surgeries while never getting true clarity about WHY their pain happened in the first place – this needs to STOP!

Most lower back issues are mechanical in nature. The biggest causes is typically weak core muscles. Now some people are going to say that they never work their core, and others will state that their core is very strong. What lower back pain comes down to is how well those core muscles are actually engaging or doing their actual job.

I always tell patients and prospective patients two stories. One. I suffered with lower back and chronic disc issues and pain for over a decade starting in chiropractic school. To put it in perspective, I would get chiropractic adjustments 7 days a week. I did every physical therapy exercise known to mankind. I stretched every day for up to 4 hours with little to no relief. I foam rolled. I taped my back. I got acupuncture. When I was in private practice I did decompression therapy, bought a $20 thousand dollar laser and ended up being a $120K whole body cryotherapy machine all to help my pain with minimal success.

I couldn’t sit on chairs or on the ground. I couldn’t sit upright in bed, I had to flip to the side to get up. Like most of you reading this, I would wake up in pain and feel better as I moved around, only to be hit with pain after rest or not moving for periods of time like sitting in a car or watching television. Yet, as an athlete I could deadlift 350 pounds from a deficit, and I worked my core muscles from every angle possible, but none of those things helped.

Second story is about a famous world record holding powerlifter, Brian Carroll. Brian could squat 1300 pounds but couldn’t get out of his car without excruciating pain. X-rays and MRI’s showed two severe disc herniations and a severe vertebral fracture. Orthopedic Surgeons told him they could fix him with surgery by fusing his spine but that he would never be able to work out like he used to.

Brian flew to University of Waterloo to consult with the world’s leading Spinal Biomechanics researcher, Dr. Stuart McGill, who proceeded to tell him that he wasn’t really using his core. He worked with Dr. McGill for several months and later had another spine MRI which showed that his discs had completely healed themselves.

While I might not be a world record powerlifter and you might not be either, I have been pain free for nearly a decade and the cause of all of our back injuries is exactly the same.

We have core muscles completely surrounding our spine and their main jobs are to protect the spine. When one of those muscles doesn’t do their jobs, another muscle jumps in and takes over. Those overworked muscles develop scar tissue and adhesions and they lose their flexibility or elasticity.

We can stretch those tight and injured lower back muscles, we can massage them and make them feel better but it comes down to the core muscles. We can do all of our core muscle exercises but the crux of the operation is that the weak muscles will just utilize the other muscles and make themselves look strong. They cheat.

Treating symptoms is one thing, finding the root cause of those symptoms SOLVES the problem

The world of pain relief is filled with marketing and massive amounts of myopic thinking. This chiropractor says “a bone is out of place,” that physical therapy office says “just do this 10 pages of exercises” and often the medical approach is to medicate, inject, or cut – sadly, that’s the world that we live in and unlike this website it’s not all black and white.

The fact is, treating symptoms will never result in permanent relief. It’s like duct taping a leaky ceiling. It might look good for a hot minute, but it doesn’t take that long before you wish you hired a better contractor.

After being in the pain and performance world for 20 plus years, my focus today is providing immediate relief, but also being the detective that leaves no stone unturned of showing you how to keep it that way.

Dr. Jeremiah is my go to for my patients when all else fails

Dr. Robert Schoderbeck – Orthopedist

I know this sounds crazy… I will fly to Charleston to see him… hands down this guy is a healer

Mo Maynor

Dr. Jimerson is OUTSTANDING! As a clinician myself, I appreciate his direction and encouragement… but mostly the RESULTS!

Priscilla Nugent – Physical Therapist

Lower back pain and disc injuries are actually very easy to treat. I have treated thousands of lower back cases since we opened our first clinic in Summerville in 2007 and it’s one of the reasons why patients traveled from Kiawah and Johns Island, Mount Pleasant, James Island and Charleston all the way to Summerville to get treatment and one of the biggest reasons why we opened a central Charleston (West Ashley) location as well (We have since sold our Summerville office).

I don’t focus on just treating lower back pain, the goal is to try and figure out what the root cause was in the first place. On your first visit I do a full biomechanics evaluation from posture to every part of your body that would affect your lower back injury. I look at big toe flexibility, ankle, knee, hip, and thoracic spine mobility. How well all of your muscles stretch, how strong are each of your core muscles and gluteal muscles are… just to name a few.

I start off utilizing decompression therapy, Active Release Technique ( a patented myofascial release similar to if massage therapy and yoga had a baby on steroids), along with other neurological techniques that can increase range of motion and take away pain in literal seconds.

While every case is unique, most patients feel 80-110% better even on the first visit and get sent home with 3-4 minimal effort, maximum benefit exercises (instead of 10 pages of cookie cutter exercises) meant to target your biggest imbalances.

While we are a chiropractic office, our main focus is muscles and soft tissue. While we are very versed in chiropractic manipulation, it’s just a tool, like a screwdriver and you cannot build an entire house with just a screwdriver. Our soft tissue treatments focus on eliminating the cause of the pain, rather than covering up the symptoms.

If you suffer from sports injuries such as Achilles tendon pain, don’t wait, contact our active release chiropractic clinic today at 843-873-6004, to see how Dr. Jeremiah can help you.
